A Twitter user said that the ‘pure vegetarian’ sign outside the restaurant was a caste indicator. A heated debate broke out on Twitter regarding the tweet.
‘Pure Veg’ started trending on Twitter after a user called such signs outside restaurants as ‘disrespectful’ and ‘un-inclusive’. “All these “pure vegan” signs in food stores are offensive and non-inclusive,” wrote a Twitter user. Clearly stating that other food preferences are “impure” and legitimizing discrimination against people with diverse preferences ” Whether or not “pure vegetarian” was essentially a caste indicator, or if it meant pure vegetarian food, ie without eggs, onions and the like. Others said it meant that such restaurants cooked exclusively vegetarian food.
Other Twitter users said that “pure” used in this context means that the food has been cooked by Brahmins and is therefore a casteist practice.
When they say Shuddha it means vegetarian food cooked by Brahmins. Vegetarian food cooked by non-Brahmins is not considered pure enough for Brahmin customers to eat.โ (((Dominic Fisherwoman))) ๐ (@AbbakkaHypatia) January 15, 2023
It’s ok IMO. Pure here refers to exclusive. These restaurants exclusively cook only vegetarian food. Some people do not like to eat in outside restaurants where both veg and non-veg dishes are cooked. There is no need to make an issue out of everything.- Sister Michael (@anchan_sonia) January 16, 2023
Picking up the English language in a country where you don’t find a photocopy shop but a ‘Xerox’ shop. Or what Indians call ‘surf’ powder, not detergent powder. We call AC buses ‘Volvo’ buses and going to a ‘puncture’ shop is fine when we have a flat tyre. January 17, 2023
Behen explain to me how transferred adjectives work is a reference to the constitution of the ‘pure’ category. Example: pure gold pure ghee does not mean that gold or ghee are divine ingredients and others are not. It simply means that there is no mixing in the jewelery or food product

The same restaurant can be called a vegetarian restaurant and no one would doubt it. What is the attachment to the word “pure”? How does a “pure” vegetarian restaurant differ from a vegetarian restaurant? โ Totoro (@studioghibli777) January 16, 2023
Which is actually a euphemism for “upper caste” aka Brahmin. โ Ravi C Dasgupta (@ravisidasgupta1) January 16, 2023
