Rahul Gandhi narrates the incident that inspired him not to wear sweaters

When Rahul Gandhi was traveling to Bharat Jodo, the biggest question before many people was how the Congress leader survived the severe cold without wearing warm clothes. Responding to this, Gandhi on Monday narrated the story of four children whom he met during the cross-country march.

“…four children came to me. They were beggars and had no clothes…I hugged them…they were cold and shivering. Maybe they didn’t have food. I thought if they didn’t have clothes Wearing a jacket or sweater, I should not wear the same…” Gandhi said.

He added, he ‘learned a lot during the journey’. He told another story of a young girl who gave him a note to read that spoke of “hurting” her.

“I learned a lot. One day, I was in a lot of pain. I thought I would have to walk for another 6-7 hours and it would be difficult. But a young girl came running to me and said she had something written for me. She hugged me and ran away. I started reading it,” Gandhi said.

She wrote, “I can see your knee is hurting because it shows on your face when you put pressure on that leg. I can’t walk with you but I walk with you from my heart because I knowing that you are running for me and my future. At that very moment, my pain disappeared,” he said.

Gandhi’s remarks came while addressing the closing ceremony of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar, which marks the end of the journey.

Srinagar was lashed by heavy rain and snowfall on Sunday night and pictures from this morning showed the Gandhi siblings playing in the snow at the Congress party headquarters.

During the yatra, Gandhi and others traveled to a dozen states and two union territories in about five months after its launch in Kanyakumari on September 7, 2022. Gandhi addressed 12 public meetings, more than 100 street meetings, 13 press conferences. He had over 275 walking talks and over 100 sit-down talks.
