Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address the party’s rally in Kolar on Sunday at the same place where he A comment on the Modi surname for which he was held guilty of criminal defamationAs a result of which his membership of Parliament was taken away.

According to state Congress sources, the former AICC president will reach Bengaluru on Sunday morning and proceed to Kolar where he will address a ‘Jai Bharat’ rally organized by the party.

In the evening, Mr Gandhi will inaugurate the newly built ‘Indira Gandhi Bhavan’ – an office and auditorium with a seating capacity of 750 people – near the Karnataka PCC office in Bengaluru.

Several senior Congress leaders, including AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, KPCC chief DK Shivakumar and legislature party leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah are expected to attend the events.

Congress sources said the rally was earlier scheduled for April 5, which was later postponed to April 9 and finally to April 16, due to the preparation for the elections and the candidate selection process, among other reasons.

Rahul Gandhi was on March 23 sentenced to two years in jail by a court in Gujarat’s Surat in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark. A day later, he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case. The scion of the Gandhi family made the remark in Kolar during the Lok Sabha election campaign in April 2019.

His Sunday visit is important for the party ahead of the May 10 assembly elections in Karnataka.

Kolar assumes significance as Siddaramaiah has expressed his desire to contest from there as his second seat. He has already been fielded from Varuna in Mysore district.

The Congress is yet to name its candidate for the Kolar seat.
