Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Sivagiri Math and offered prayers at Maha Samadhi.

He interacted with Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust President Swami Satchidananda, General Secretary Swami Ritambarananda and other sannyasis.

Later Swami Satchidananda described this visit as a pleasant surprise. He said that the Math had invited Mr. Gandhi in the past. But, then this visit did not happen. Swamy said the Sree Narayana community constitutes 28 per cent of Kerala’s population.

However, the demographic was not reflected in the make-up of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). “The Congress has only one MLA from the community,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi was welcomed by the saints of Sivagiri Madhom in Varkala on Wednesday.

Swami Satchidananda reminisced about the visit of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi to Sivagiri.

Shri Gandhi said that the Bharat Jodi Yatra is a social protest against the divisive politics being practiced by certain sections in the name of religion. The yatra sought to unite the people and strengthen the secular fabric of the country.

A galaxy of Congress leaders accompanied Mr. Gandhi to Sivagiri. Among them KPCC president K. Sudhakaran, Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan and AICC Organizing Secretary KC Venugopal.
