Rajasthan: Clashes in Jodhpur on Eid; internet services suspended

In Rajasthan’s Jodhpur city, a clash broke out between two communities on Monday night after some miscreants replaced the religious flag of one community with another at Balmukand Bissa of Jalori Gate intersection. People from other communities opposed the move which resulted in stone pelting and clashes. The mob also uprooted the loudspeakers in the area for the Eid prayers. Police arrived after the stone pelting incident and intervened to disperse the crowd.

According to news agencies, “Four policemen were injured in stone pelting. Heavy police force was deployed in the area to control the situation.”

The Jodhpur district administration has temporarily suspended internet services in the district from 1 pm on Tuesday.

As a result, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot described the clashes between the two groups as “unfortunate” and directed the district administration to maintain law and order at all costs.

CM Gehlot tweeted, “It is an unfortunate incident that a tense atmosphere has arisen due to the clash between two groups at Jodhpur’s Jalori Gate. Administration has been instructed to maintain peace and order at all costs.”

Gehlot said, “While respecting the tradition of love and brotherhood of Jodhpur, Marwar, I make a touching appeal to all parties to cooperate in maintaining peace and restoring law and order.”
