Rajasthan: Curfew lifted for two hours in violence-hit Karauli, said police

Jaipur Rajasthan Police on Monday informed that they have lifted curfew for two hours in Karauli district to enable common people to make essential purchases.

Karauli According to reports and police officials, the violence erupted after incidents of stone-pelting, when a bike rally ‘Shobha Yatra’ was passing through a Muslim-dominated area on the day of Hindu New Year. Police officials imposed curfew in the district after at least 35 people were injured in the incident.

Karauli District Collector (DC) Rajendra Shekhawat said, “Curfew relaxation was given for two hours on Monday for purchase of essential commodities. Central and Rajasthan government offices and courts remained open and employees could reach their offices by showing identity cards.

Though no untoward incident was reported, mobile internet service remained suspended in the city, he said. Shekhawat said a decision on continuing the curfew would be taken after a meeting of the community contact group in the evening.

Right-wing organizations including Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bajrang Dal took out the rally, police said. He said that around 35 people were injured in the violence.

Bharatpur Range Inspector General of Police Prashan Kumar Khamesra said that following the communal violence, the police arrested 46 people and detained seven others for questioning.

The IG said that a case has been registered against 13 accused and 33 others have been arrested for violating the curfew order. The police have also seized 21 vehicles. He said police patrolling teams were closely monitoring the situation and it was under control but curfew was continued as a precautionary measure. The IG said that a flag march was also conducted in the city.
