Rajkot: Five people, four of whom are handicapped, were on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 12-year-old girl in Rajkot. Of the specially-abled convicts – aged 55 to 63 – two are blind while the other two are speech and hearing impaired. The fifth convict is 40 years old. A minor accused in this case is also facing trial in the juvenile court.

The girl, a Class VII student, was lured with money and raped for more than two months in 2018, after which she became pregnant. Her mother noticed physical changes and took her to a doctor who confirmed the pregnancy. The girl later gave birth to a stillborn child, and a DNA test confirmed that one of the five convicts was the father.
Apart from sexually abusing her for months, the main culprit – a disabled man who lived near the girl’s house – also made her do housework for meager money. The girl’s father is unemployed due to ill health while her mother works as a maid.
In her police complaint, the girl initially named two convicts and a minor. Later, some neighbors of the main culprit told the girl’s mother that they had also seen her being taken to other people’s houses. Police have investigated and arrested four other people involved in the incident. Court considers statements of doctor, girl, her mother FSL Report, documentary evidence to convict the five.
