The Andhra Pradesh government has banned public meetings and rallies on roads, including national highways, citing public safety.

The order comes after a stampede at a rally organized by the main opposition Telugu Desam Party in Kandukuru last week, in which eight people were killed. Prohibitory orders were issued late on Monday night under the provisions of the Police Act, 1861.

In the mandate, Principal Secretary (Home) Harish Kumar Gupta asked the concerned district administration and police machinery to identify designated places away from public roads for conducting public meetings, which do not obstruct the flow of traffic, public movement, emergency services Huh. , movement of essential goods, etc.”

The principal secretary said, “The authorities should refrain from allowing public road gatherings. Only in rare and exceptional circumstances permission for public gatherings may be considered, with reasons to be written.”

The Principal Secretary highlighted the Kandukuru incident that took place on 28 December and said that “holding meetings on public roads and road sides is causing deaths and disrupting traffic.” He said that it took a lot of time for the police to control the situation.
