Ralph Rangnick granted work permit to start Manchester United job

Ralph Rangnick has been given a work permit to begin his term as interim manager of Manchester United, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.

The 63-year-old German will be introduced to the media on Friday and will lead the team at Crystal Palace for the first time in two days.

“As all the paperwork is now complete, we will have a personal press conference with Ralph Rangnick at Old Trafford tomorrow at 9:00 am,” the joint statement said.

United on Monday confirmed Rangnik’s appointment as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s short-term replacement, just a week after the Norwegian was sacked after a 4-1 loss at lowly Watford.

But Rangnik, who was manager of sports and development at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow, had to wait for a work permit to begin his role at Old Trafford.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick will take charge for the third time against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday, with the former United midfielder overseeing a Champions League win at Villarreal and a Premier League draw at Chelsea.

Rangnik will remain as manager until the end of the season before starting a two-year consulting role at United.

Carrick said on Wednesday that he has yet to speak to the former RB Leipzig boss.

“I am in this position, as I was for Villarreal and Chelsea,” he said. “I’m preparing the boys for the (Arsenal) game.

“It’s too much as it was for both games. We are not able to (speak) because of the process.”

United are 10th in the Premier League ahead of their match against Arsenal, 15 points behind leaders Chelsea and six points behind fourth-placed West Ham.

The 20-time English champions have won just one of their last eight Premier League matches but will be desperate to take advantage of a Kinder fixtures list in the next few weeks.
