Ranchi: From working as a porter to serving as a gatekeeper, Umren SethA PhD scholar from Ranchi University who has qualified for Junior Research Fellow through the National Eligibility Test has come a long way.
Seth, a resident of remote Telwadih village of Sonahatu panchayat in rural Ranchi, completed his secondary education from a local school in his village. After doing his matriculation without informing the family, he shifted to Ranchi.
After reaching Ranchi, Seth worked as a porter (labourer) at a construction site for over a year and later became a guard in an apartment upon completion of construction. “I worked as a guard for six to seven years and continued my studies. However, due to work commitments, I could not get that much time for my studies.”
With the encouragement and support of his family and friends, Seth resumed his studies despite limited resources or facilities.
To save time and energy, he shifted to Morabadi near Ranchi University College campus in 2019 and started preparing for National Eligibility Test (NET). “I appeared for the exam in December 2020 but was not aware of my results for more than a year until my professors told me. I had cleared the National Fellowship Scheduled Castes (NFSC) and in a Was eligible for JRF (Junior Research Fellow). Try without any coaching or classes.”
Seth enrolled himself for a Ph.D. This year in the Hindi department of Ranchi University. “My thesis is on sympathetic expression in Dalit evidence and their evaluation. As a Dalit, I have experienced direct exploitation and hardship and seek to transform academics through education and knowledge.”
