Ranchi Violence: Explanation sought from top cop on posters of accused

Ranchi Violence: Police said that 29 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

Ranchi, Jharkhand:

A day after Jharkhand Police put up posters containing photographs of people allegedly involved in the recent violent protests in Ranchi, state Home Secretary Rajiv Arun Ekka on Wednesday evening sought an explanation from the SSP on the “unlawful” act.

Hours after putting up the posters on Tuesday, police removed them from different parts of the state capital, citing a technical snag. The law enforcers had also said that the errors would be corrected and the posters would be reissued.

“This is not valid and is against the order dated March 9, 2020 passed by the Hon’ble High Court, Allahabad,” said the letter from Mr. Ekka, Principal Secretary, Home, Jail and Disaster Management Department.

“… the Hon’ble Court had directed the State of Uttar Pradesh not to put up roadside posters containing personal information of persons without legal authority. This matter is nothing but undue interference in the privacy of the people. Hence, it is India Violation of Article 21 of the Constitution of India.”

Two people were killed and over two dozen seriously injured as protests broke out in Ranchi over controversial remarks by now-suspended BJP leaders against Prophet Mohammad.

The police had issued posters of around 30 people who were allegedly involved in the violent protests, seeking information about them.

The move comes a day after Governor Ramesh Bais summoned DGP Neeraj Sinha and other senior officials to the Raj Bhavan and questioned why preventive measures or action was not taken to disperse the crowd during the agitation.

Police said 29 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

Tension still prevailed in the state capital with prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in some parts of the city. Security has also been increased in Ranchi.

Meanwhile, BJP national vice president and former chief minister Raghubar Das on Wednesday visited the violence-hit areas and demanded an NIA probe into the agitation.
