RBI central board assesses domestic, global economic situation, challenges

The 591st meeting of the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was held on Friday. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das chaired the first meeting after getting a three-year extension in office.

The Central Board of RBI in its meeting today reviewed the current domestic and global economic situation and challenges. The discussion focused on possible ways to meet the emerging challenges.

The Central Board also discussed the working of its sub-committees. It also deliberated on the activities of some Central Office Departments, including a nationwide survey among bank customers regarding the functioning of the grievance redressal system of banks and Ombudsman schemes.

The Board of Directors also congratulated Governor Das on his reappointment for three years.

Central bank deputy governors Mahesh Kumar Jain, Michael Debabrata Patra, M. Rajeshwar Rao, T. Rabi Shankar were present during the meeting.

In the meeting N. Chandrasekaran, Satish K. Marathe, S. Other directors of the central board including Gurumurthy and Sachin Chaturvedi also attended.

Debashish Panda, Secretary, Department of Financial Services, and Ajay Seth, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, also participated in the meeting.

Das was appointed as the 25th Governor of RBI on December 11, 2018 for a period of three years following the sudden resignation of his predecessor Urjit Patel.

He is the first RBI governor to get an extension after the BJP-led government came to power in 2014.
