Jagruti Theater will celebrate World Theater Day on March 27 and present a reading of Arthur Miller’s play on stage. the crucible, written by Arthur Miller. Arundhati Raja, founder-trustee of Jagriti and director of the play, says the crucible It was chosen because of its relevance in society today.

Arundhati has directed over 30 productions and has been in theater for over 45 years. Speaking over phone from Bengaluru, she says, “Arthur Miller wrote the play when the US government started persecuting people accused of being Communists. A classic, the play is still relevant.

The play dramatized the infamous Salem witch trials of 17 th By making an allegory between 19th century Massachusetts, the trials, and the hunting of alleged communists.

Arundhati adds, “The relevance is still strong because of the current political, religious and social climate.

She says that since it is a difficult task for any theater company to produce, Jagruti has instead prepared a reading of the play. The readings will feature an experienced cast of 14 characters to bring the words to life, she says.

The show is a part of the company’s Rebuilding Resources Initiative. Jaagriti’s artistic director Rebecca Spurgeon says that all the funds raised from the show will go directly to the infrastructure and operational costs of Jaagriti as regular income sources were affected due to the pandemic.

“The last few years have not been easy for anyone and it has been particularly difficult in terms of performances. This initiative is a way for the theater to incorporate programming focused on raising funds so that we can continue to operate and survive these uncertain times.

The reading will be followed by a brief conversation with Aditya Sondhi, a senior advocate and theater artist on the themes of the play.
