‘Relaxing on a wicker chair’: Anand Mahindra shares the interior of a 1936 UK plane

Anand Mahindra’s Twitter feed has a lot of interesting and informative facts and news for everyone and likewise, Mahindra shared a picture of the interior of an airplane from the 1930s on Twitter. The photo shows the interior of an aircraft of Imperial Airways, the first British airline in 1936, and two rows of wicker chairs inside for passengers to sit on. The interior of the plane also looked very different from what we are used to seeing today. The windows looked huge with curtains hanging on and overhead lights on the ceiling. But what was more interesting and worthy of questioning was a board with ‘ripping panel’ written on what we now know as ’emergency exit’ on our modern-day planes.

These chairs, not surprisingly looked like our modern day seats and could easily be taken from one’s garden furniture!

to keep track:

Mahindra credited The Historian Post for the photo.

A Twitter user shared some more pictures of the airline:

A Reddit thread had shared this image earlier, which was discussed by many users.

One user said, ‘Looks like when my cousins and I used to pretend to be pilots in our kitchen. We would set up the chairs in the same way and put stuffed toys on the seats as our ‘customers’.

Another said, “Ah, so planes where always tight. Nice to know. Annoying. But nice to know.”

Another person said, “I got to see the inside of one of these planes at a museum recently and all I can say are those chairs as f**k small, and my 5’11 200+ lbs by itself It would be very uncomfortable to fly in one.”

COVID-19 restrictions around the world have limited air travel and there has been continued concern about the uncertainty of flights. Mahindra wrote, “At this time of anxiety-ridden air travel, a refreshing throwback while in flight was like relaxing in an easy chair.”
