Renowned Bengali singer Nirmala Mishra passed away at the age of 81 due to a heart attack

Veteran Bengali and Oriya singer, Nirmala Mishra died of a heart attack on Sunday at her residence in Kolkata’s Chetla area. She was 81 years old. Mishra was reportedly suffering from age-related ailments for some time.

The doctor told PTI that she suffered a heart attack at around 12.05 am and was taken to a nearby nursing home, where the singer was declared brought dead. He also said, “His body will be kept in the hospital tonight.”

Singer Indrani Sen, who was one of her great fans, is deeply saddened by the incident. As reported by TOI, she says, “I grew up listening to his songs and used to sing his songs in radio programmes. Nirmala di was a great person and very funny person too. Unfortunately, she was not well for quite some time and was almost lying in bed.

Roopankar Bagchi said, “She was one of the greatest singers and was blessed with a very melodious voice. Nirmala Di was a great person and very friendly and warm natured. I have many beautiful memories with him.”

His popular Bengali songs include Eamon Ekta Jhinuk, Bolo Se Arshi and E Banglar Mati Te, while some of his hit Odia songs are ‘Nida Bhara Rati Madhu Jhara Janha’ and ‘Mo Man Bina Ra Taare’. Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Condoled the demise of Mishra. Official sources said the singer’s body would be taken to Rabindra Sadan around 11 am to pay last respects to her fans and admirers.

Born in 1938 in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, Mishra is the recipient of the Sangeet Sudhakar Balkrishna Das Award, which was awarded to the singer for her lifetime contribution to Odia music. He was also honored with Banga Vibhushan, Sangeet Samman and other prestigious awards for his contribution to Bengali music.
