Residents of Bengaluru report mysterious surge, officials rule out earthquake

Hours after residents of Bengaluru in Karnataka heard a loud ‘boom’, the State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center on Friday said there were no signs of a local earthquake or quake.

A statement issued by the Director of KSNDMC said, “Reports of mild tremor associated sound by local residents today on 26.11.2021 between 11.50 am to 12.15 pm on 26.11.2021 at Hemigepura, Kengeri, Gyanbharti, Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Kaglipura, Bangalore.”

“Data from our seismic observatories were analyzed for any seismic signature/potential earthquake signals during the said time period. The seismographs show no signs of local tremors/earthquakes,” it added.

However, many took to social media to say that their doors and windows vibrated and questioned whether it was another sonic boom.

“Just heard a loud bang in Bangalore, only then doors and windows vibrated. I felt it in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. #Bangalore #Bangalore #SonicBoom? Others felt it too?? (sic)” wrote a social media user.

This is not the first time that residents of Bengaluru have reported such an incident.

In July, people reported “booms” in areas of Sarjapur, JP Nagar, Benson Town, Ulsoor, ISRO Layout and HSR Layout, with window panes also “broken”.
