Retail inflation for industrial workers rises to 6.4% in September on higher food prices

According to government data released on Monday, retail inflation for industrial workers rose from 5.85 per cent in August 2022 to 6.49 per cent in September, mainly due to higher prices of certain food items.

“Year-on-year inflation (of September 2022) was 6.49 per cent as compared to 5.85 per cent in the previous month (August, 2022) and 4.40 per cent during the same month (September 2021) a year ago,” in a statement from the Ministry of Labor Having said.

Similarly, it said that food inflation stood at 7.76 per cent against 6.46 per cent in the previous month and 2.26 per cent during the same month a year ago.

The All India CPI-IW (Consumer Price Index – Industrial Workers) for September, 2022 stood at 131.3 points with an increase of 1.1 points. In August 2022 it was 130.2 points.

On a one-month percentage change, it increased by 0.84 per cent over the previous month, compared to a growth of 0.24 per cent in the same month a year ago.

The maximum upward pressure in the current index came from the food and beverage group, which contributed 0.68 percentage points to the total change. At item level, Rice, Wheat Flour, Buffalo Milk, Dairy Milk, Poultry/Chicken, Carrot, Cauliflower, Green Coriander, Onion, Potato, Tomato, Vada, Idli, Dosa etc. are responsible for the increase in the index.

However, it is stated that this growth was mainly controlled by fish (fresh), palm oil, mustard oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, apple, asafoetida, orange, gourd (gourd) etc., This put pressure on the index.

At the center level, Bhavnagar recorded the highest increase of 4.5 points. Others registered an increase of 3 to 3.9 points in 6 centres, 2 to 2.9 points in 10 centres, 1 to 1.9 points in 24 centers and 0.1 and 0.9 points in 30 centres. In contrast, Chhindwara, Ahmedabad and Shillong recorded a maximum decline of 0.6 points each.

In others, between 0.1 and 0.9 points were recorded in 8 centers. The index for the remaining six centers remained stable.

The Labor Bureau, an attached office of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, is compiling the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers every month on the basis of retail prices aggregated from 317 markets spread over 88 industrially important centers of the country.

The index is compiled for 88 centers and all India and is released on the last working day of the following month.
