Retail sales of new vehicles declined by 25 per cent during FY2022 as compared to pre-Covid sales in FY20

Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has vehicle retail data for the financial year 2021-22. Between April 2021 and March 2022, the auto industry collectively sold 1,63,75,799 vehicles in India. Compared to sales of 27,74,340 vehicles in FY20, the passenger vehicle segment witnessed a decline of 2 per cent in FY22

In FY22, the passenger vehicle segment witnessed retail sales of 27,26,047 units, which is almost 2 per cent lower than the sales of 27,74,340 vehicles in FY20. However, when compared to 23,87,925 units sold in FY21, the segment witnessed a growth of over 14 per cent. On the other hand, the two-wheeler segment reported retail sales of 1,19,73,415 for the period April 2021-March 2022. During the period April 2021-March 2022, total three-wheeler sales stood at 3,88,093 units, a steep decline of 46 per cent as compared to 7,19,643 units sold in FY20. However, the same segment, when compared to 2, sold 58,172 three-wheelers in FY21, showing a much higher growth of 50.32 per cent. At the same time, 6,52,125 units were sold in the commercial vehicle (CV) segment. Compared to 8,82,524 units sold in FY20, the segment witnessed a decline of over 26 per cent, however, YoY growth stood at over 45 per cent as compared to 4,49,324 units sold in FY21.

FADA says that all segments except tractors closed on a positive note in FY 2022. Between April 2021 and March 2022, total tractor retail sales stood at 6,36,119 units, a decline of 1.37 per cent year-on-year.
