Retired US couple found mathematical flaw in lottery, won $26 million

We always dream of winning the lottery of millions and live the rest of our lives like a royal, but often, luck is not on our side. But that was not the case with the United States couple, who have won nearly $26 million in various state lottery games several times. His story which gained popularity is now churned out in a Hollywood film, Jerry and Marge Go Large.

According to the LA Times, real-life couple Jerry and Marge Selby from Michigan, United States, used the winning money to renovate their home. He also helped with the education of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jerry Selby, now in his 80s, worked his entire career as a ingredients analyst at Kellogg’s cereal factory. A retired person is also considered good in terms of numbers.

In 2003, Selby bought his first state lottery ticket from a game called Winfall. As he found a mathematical flaw, he was sure that he would win. “I looked at the odds, I saw what the payoff would be and I did a risk-reward analysis. It took me less than two minutes to figure out that that game could be profitable,” he told the publishing house.

Speaking to the NY Post, Jerry said that it gave him something to do every six weeks that was completely different. “Being retired, you can only do so much camping, picking up rocks, which was our hobby, and stuff like that,” he said.

Jerry continued, saying that it took him several attempts to find the flaws in the game. He said that in the first play he went for $2,200 (about Rs 1.75 lakh) and it caused him a loss of $ 50 (about Rs 4,000). Then for the second time, he went for $3,600 (about Rs 2.86 lakh) and won $6,300 (Rs 5.01 lakh). In the third play, Mr. Selby went for $8,000 (Rs 6.36 lakh) in large numbers and won back $15,700 (Rs 12.49 lakh).

Jerry and Marge soon began playing the game for hundreds and thousands of dollars. As the NY Post reports, the couple used to make short trips from Michigan to Massachusetts and deliberately visited smaller towns.

The game was called off after the pair’s last win was in 2012.
