Rip Through Cummins & Co. England

Pat Cummins made a fine start to his captaincy with a five-for as Australia beat England for 147 on the first day of the Ashes at the Gabba on Wednesday.

After England captain Joe Root took the bat, the Australian fast bowling trio of Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood rioted to bundle out the tourists in just 50.1 overs.

great start from the captain

Cummins took five for 38 in his first game as Test captain after taking over from Tim Paine.

Starc took two for 35 and Hazlewood took two for 42 as England batsman Gaba Green failed to catch up with the bounce at the top.

England had a disastrous start to the series when it lost Rory Burns on the first ball of the match, with Starc bowling a left-handed ball around his feet. This was the second time in Ashes history that a wicket had fallen on the first ball of the series. The previous example was also in Brisbane in 1936, when Stan Worthington of England was dismissed.

David Malan, who scored six, and Root, who was dismissed for naught, followed swiftly as England rolled down to 11 for three. Before Jos Buttler (39), Ollie Pope (35) and Chris Woakes (21) came out, Cummins dismissed the dreaded Ben Stokes for five runs before Jos Buttler (39), Ollie Pope (35) and Chris Woakes (21) took the lead. A hot and humid morning left England to struggle at 59 for four at lunch. ,
