Roads leading to Yercaud blocked due to heavy tourist influx

Tourists, mostly from Kerala and Karnataka, witnessed traffic congestion at the hill top during the day in Yercaud on Sunday.

Most of the roads witnessed heavy congestion and heavy traffic as tourists arrived in cars and other vehicles despite heavy fog and cold conditions.

Huge crowds were witnessed at Anna Park, Rose Garden, Pagoda Point, Shevaroy Temple, Ladies Seat and Gents Seat, while long queues of tourists waited for a boat ride at the Boat House. Since Christmas falls on a Sunday, tourists from other states reach Yercaud early in the morning. The shops selling tea, snacks and food items saw good business after several months.

Due to insufficient space for parking, vehicles are parked indiscriminately on the roads leading to traffic jams. Police personnel had to struggle a lot in controlling the traffic.

The shopkeepers said that since the schools will remain closed for a week, they expect the inflow to be stable in the coming days till January 2. Many shoppers feared that the spread of the Omicron version and restrictions would affect their business that had not yet recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic. ,
