Rohini Hattangadi applied for the role of mother; Says ‘What was said that he will not get…’

Rohini Hattangadi talks about playing the role of a mother

Rohini Hattangadi was best known for her role in Richard Attenborough’s biographical film Gandhi.

Rohini Hattangadi is a seasoned actress who needs no introduction. She has been a part of many films, but her role of Kasturba Gandhi in Richard Attenborough’s biographical film Gandhi brought her immense popularity. However, the actress has recently recalled how she was getting only the role of a mother at one point of time.

In an interview with Unfiltered By Samdish, the veteran actress said that she had shared her problem with filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya and told him how everyone only offered her the role of a mother. To this “they said to me, ‘So who else would they give it to?’ I told him, ‘What? Why should I play mother roles?’ Then he said, ‘You are not a socialist. You and Sanjeev Kumar are the two actors people can rely on for old roles. Who else is going to play the old role? No one dares to look old,” Rohini was quoted as saying.

It is to be noted that she has played the mother of Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun and Shatrughan Sinha. During the interview, the actor revealed that she had completely decided not to play mother roles. Destiny had something else in store for her and she got Mukul Anand’s Agneepath, in which she played Amitabh Bachchan’s mother.

“Before Agneepath, I had decided that I would not do mother roles. I refused three-four films. My secretary used to tell me, ‘Rohini ji you are saying no to every thing, please don’t do this, no one will come to you’. I wanted to at least give me negative roles, why am I always given only positive roles where I would say something like, ‘Beta gajar ka halwa kha, maine apne haathon se banaya hai’”, said the actress.

However, the veteran actress mentioned why she accepted the role. “Then when the offer for Agneepath came, I said I will first listen to the story and then take a call. Halfway through narrating the story, I said I will do the film. Mukul ji had another film before Agneepath which I had turned down so he asked me, ‘Okay, so now you are ready to play a mother on screen?’ I told him the reason for saying yes to the film was because he, the heroine and the villain feature prominently in Amitabh ji’s film. But here, from the commissioner to the pathan to the sister, everyone is visible,” said Rohini. To a Pathan, to a sister,” said Rohini.
