Chief selector Chetan Sharma on Friday said that his committee does not want to take any chances with the captain. Rohit Sharma For the upcoming three ODIs in South Africa as there are going to be several important series and a T20 World Cup in the coming year.
After talks with the white-ball captain, the selectors were of the view that it would be wiser for Rohit to work on his rehab and fitness rather than travel to South Africa with the team.
After announcing the squad for the match against South Africa, Chetan said in a media conference, “That’s why we decided that he (Rohit) will go and do his rehab, work on his fitness, work on his muscles. “
One of the finest white-ball players, Rohit was ruled out of the ongoing three-match Test series in South Africa after his old hamstring injury resurfaced during the team’s training session in Mumbai.
In form in absence of Rohit KL Rahul Will lead an 18-man squad in South Africa.
“There is so much cricket happening. No player wants to get hurt, everyone wants to play, nobody gets injured intentionally.
“And that was the reason why Rohit was stopped from these three matches, that he is 100 per cent fit, you have the World Cup in front of you, you have important series ahead of you, that is the reason.
Chetan said, “We had a good conversation with Rohit, all the selectors had a good conversation with Rohit and that’s why he is not going to South Africa and is the KL captain.”
Rohit is doing his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
