Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel bowled brilliantly in the slog overs as India survived some worrying moments and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with an eight-run win over West Indies in the second T20I. Friday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran (62 off 41 balls) and Rovman Powell (68 not out off 36 balls) chased down 187 runs needing just 29 runs in the last two overs. Dropped for 21 by Bishnoi in the 10th over, Nicholas Pooran completed his fifty in 34 balls – with a slog in the final over from Deepak Chahar – his second in as many games.

Under pressure, he dismissed Rovman Powell on his own delivery, Bhuvneshwar was brilliant and conceded just four runs in the over. Needing 25 off the final over, Patel was hit for two consecutive sixes but he held his nerves to seal the issue for India.

Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation ceremony, “Always a scare when you are playing against these guys. We knew it would be a bit tough. We were very well prepared. Under pressure, we put our all in. Plans carried out.”

“Given the timing it was very important. Experience plays a part. He was hitting those yorkers and that weird bouncer. We believe in his talent. It was a very important innings from Virat. He took the pressure off me. Great finish from Pant and Iyer too,” said Rohit.

He said, “Very happy to see how he has progressed. It is very pleasant to see such maturity. He backs his skills and that is what every captain wants. In the end, he wanted to bowl an over as well. We had to bowl our own over. The team needs such characters. We were a little slack on the field. A little disappointed with it. The game would have been different if we had taken those catches,” Rohit signed off.
