India captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 in the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and has been placed in isolation beyond the ‘fifth’. test against englandBCCI said on Sunday.

The Test match is scheduled to begin in Birmingham from July 1 and if Rohit remains in isolation for six days, pacer Jasprit Bumrah or wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant could be asked to lead the team.

“Team India captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a media release.

“He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the supervision of the BCCI medical team. RT-PCR test will be conducted to ascertain his Ct value on Sunday,” the release said.

Rohit had batted on the first day of the ongoing warm-up match against Leicestershire but did not take the field on the second day. He did not bat in the second Indian innings.

The 35-year-old Indian skipper is expected to open the innings along with Shubman Gill in the Test match and his participation will now depend on the result of his RT-PCR test and recovery.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also joined the squad in England of late as he also tested positive for COVID-19 before the team left for the UK tour.

In the UK matches are no longer played under the bio-bubble. India also recently hosted South Africa without a bio-bubble.
