Thiruvananthapuram, October 28: A day after the Supreme Court directed that the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam be maintained at 139.5 feet, the Kerala Assembly on Friday observed ruling and opposition members on the dam and the stands taken by them. Attacking the government on the issue, the Congress-led UDF alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s recent statement that there was no cause for concern regarding the dam was used by the Tamil Nadu government to protect its interests. Was.

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala claimed that the government has failed to clearly present the views of the state before the Supreme Court. Supporting his stand, his party colleagues Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan and K Babu said that the Vijayan government went back on its stand of maintaining the water level at 136 feet and that they had failed to find a political solution to the problem.

However, Finance Minister KN Balagopal rubbished the allegations and said that the government has always tried to protect the interests of the state in its decades-old dispute with the neighboring state. Industries and Law Minister, P Rajeev clarified that through the ‘no need to worry’ remark, the chief minister’s intention is not to intimidate through social media platforms only.

During the discussion, a war of words broke out in the House regarding Mullaperiyar. The Supreme Court on Thursday said Tamil Nadu and Kerala will follow the water level notified by the expert committee, according to which it will be maintained at 139.5 feet in the more than a century-old Mullaperiyar dam till November 10.

This dam was built in 1895 on the Periyar River in the Idukki district of Kerala. A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar said it would be free to review its decision regarding the water level, if the situation so warranted. The top court posted the matter for hearing on November 11 so that Kerala can file a better affidavit, specifically regarding the handling of the issue on the rule curve and the right approach in that regard. The shutters of Tamil Nadu-run Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala were lifted on Friday morning as the water level in the reservoir crossed 138 feet.
