Rupee breaks 2 paise down at 73.52 against US dollar

The domestic currency opened flat at 73.51.

The rupee on Thursday lost 2 paise to close at 73.52 (provisional) against the US currency, tracking the greenback’s strength in overseas markets.

Forex traders said a bullish trend in domestic equities and sustained foreign fund inflows supported the local unit, while firming crude prices limited gains.

In the interbank forex market, the domestic currency opened flat at 73.51, with intra-day highs of 73.34 and low of 73.52 seen against the US currency during the day’s trade.

The local unit finally closed at 73.52 for the day, 2 paise lower than the previous close.

On Wednesday, the rupee had closed at 73.50 against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.24% higher at 92.77.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 0.07% to $75.41 a barrel.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex was up 417.96 points or 0.71% and touched a high of 59,141.16, while the broader NSE Nifty rose 110.05 points or 0.63% to a record 17,629.50.

Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they bought shares worth Rs 232.84 crore, according to exchange data.
