Rupee depreciates 14 paise against US dollar in early trade

The rupee ended 14 paise lower at 76.31 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday, tracking a weak trend in domestic equity markets and a strong US dollar weighing on investor sentiment.

However, a fall in international crude oil prices limited the losses, forex traders said.

At the interbank forex, the rupee opened sharply lower against the US dollar, and was moving in a tight range with a negative bias. In opening deals, it was trading at 76.31, recording a decline of 14 paise in comparison to the previous close.

The rupee had closed 13 paise higher at 76.17 against the US dollar in the previous session.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.04% to 100.65.

On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share Sensex was trading 588.97 points or 1.02% lower at 57,418.86, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 175.55 points or 1.01% to 17,217.05.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures slipped 1.13% to $107.11 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday as they sold shares worth Rs 713.69 crore, according to stock exchange data.
