Russia begins shelling Mariupol steel plant after civilian evacuation: Ukrainian officials – Henry Club

A Ukrainian military official has said Russian forces have resumed shelling a steel plant in the war-torn city of Mariupol, shortly after a partial evacuation of civilians.

Ukrainian National Guard brigade commander Denis Shlega said in a televised interview on Sunday that at least one more round of evacuations is needed to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal steel mill and that dozens of young children are inside bunkers beneath industrial facilities.

Schlega said that as soon as rescue teams stopped evacuating civilians from the plant, the shelling started.

The commander estimated that around 500 wounded soldiers and several hundred civilians were still stranded at the site, along with many bodies. The plant is the only part of the city that is not occupied by the Russians.

A video published earlier on Sunday by the Russian Defense Ministry showed people, including a small group of women with two pet dogs, exiting a steel plant.
