Russia is ‘actively’ looking at providing a humanitarian corridor to Indians living in the eastern city of Kharkiv, which has a large number of Indian students and professionals.

In his first press conference since taking over as the new ambassador to Russia, Denis Alipov lauded India’s position in the Security Council and said Moscow would investigate the death of an Indian medical student in Kharkiv.

“We are actively considering providing a humanitarian corridor so that they can be evacuated through Russian territory,” Ambassador Alipov said.

Mr. Alipov was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday following the death of a student from Karnataka.

India has sent a team of officials from Moscow to the Russian city of Belgorod, which is located near the Ukrainian border. Indian officials are stationed in Belgorod but they are unable to reach their citizens in Kharkiv due to Russian bombardment.

The ambassador’s assurances on the humanitarian corridor come amid reports that Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, has come under Russian military control. It is understood that if the ongoing fighting is stopped for some time, then India will evacuate its citizens.

The Ambassador also appreciated India’s position in the Security Council where it has not participated in a resolution on the ongoing conflict.

Ambassador Alipov also assured India that Western sanctions would not affect Russia’s willingness and ability to trade with India.

“Nothing has changed from our side. We have bilateral mechanisms to do business. It really depends on our Indian friends, some of whom are overly cautious about the risk. [to sanctions], We are ready to do business with India,” said Mr. Alipov.

The envoy also assured that there would be no disruption in Russia’s military supplies to India, adding that “the S400 deal will not be affected. 100 percent assurance on that.”

Explaining the impact of the sanctions, Mr. Alipov indicated that the Russian economy is doing well despite the sanctions. “Our economy is stable and we will face the pressure that we are experiencing and will experience in the future.”

He argued that Russia was not using banned weapons on the Ukrainian front and assured that the bombing was taking place after warning not to harm civilians during the ongoing military operation.
