Russia-Ukraine WarUkraine reported a fresh attack on an eastern city by Russian forces on Friday, hours after Moscow announced a ceasefire, the AFP news agency reported. The shelling took place in the eastern Ukrainian border town of Bakhmut, according to AFP.

According to a media report, a temporary ceasefire was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin between 9 am on Friday and 9 pm on Saturday during the Orthodox Christmas.

Just a day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Moscow’s armed forces to observe a 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine this weekend for the Russian Orthodox Christmas holiday, the most such in the nearly 11-month-old war. First Comprehensive Armistice.

Putin did not appear to make his cease-fire order conditional on a Ukrainian agreement to follow suit, and it was unclear whether hostilities would actually stop at the 1,100-kilometre (684-mile) demarcation line. Ukrainian officials have previously dismissed Russian peace moves as a ploy to regroup their forces and prepare for additional attacks. read more
