Moscow:

President Vladimir Putin said today that Russia is suspending its participation in the New START treaty with the United States that limits both sides’ strategic nuclear arsenals.

“In this regard, I am forced to announce today that Russia is suspending its participation in the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty,” Putin told lawmakers at the end of a keynote speech in parliament, on the war in Ukraine. about a year.

The New START treaty was signed in Prague in 2010, came into force the following year and was extended for five more years in 2021, right after US President Joe Biden takes office.

It limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons that can be deployed by the United States and Russia, and the deployment of land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them.

According to experts, Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world, with around 6,000 warheads. Together, Russia and the United States have about 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons – enough to destroy the planet many times over.
