Moscow:

Russia said on Monday it has successfully test-fired a Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missile from a submarine for the first time, a weapon President Vladimir Putin has lauded as part of a new generation of unrivaled weapons systems.

The Defense Ministry said the Severodvinsk submarine fired the missile into the Barents Sea, successfully hitting its chosen target.

The launch took place in the night, video footage released by the ministry showed.

In July, Russia test fired a Sircon missile from a warship.

Putin announced an array of new hypersonic weapons in one of his most bellicose speeches in years in 2018, saying they can hit almost any point in the world and evade US-made missile shields.
