Cricket legend Dilip Vengsarkar feels India should pick in-form batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad in their squad for the ODI series against South Africa.
Ruturaj has been in excellent form in recent times. Earlier, the Chennai Super Kings opener became the youngest player to receive the Orange Cap in the Indian Premier League.IPL) 2021 and now has three consecutive centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which has made him a strong contender for the Indian ODI team.
Vengsarkar said the selectors should give Ruturaj a chance to prove his mettle at the national level.
“You have to pick a guy in form. How many more runs will he have to score to prove himself? It’s high time the selectors pick him straight and give him proper runs,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by TOI.
“He (Ruturaj) can bat at No. 3 also. He should be included in the team. It’s not like he’s 18 or 19. He’s just 24. There’s no point in picking him when he’s 28. Not there.”
Rituraj was the leading run-scorer in the 2021 edition of the IPL, scoring 635 runs at an average of 45.35. And in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Maharashtra skipper now has 414 runs in three innings at an average of 207 and includes three consecutive centuries.
Gaikwad scored 136 against Madhya Pradesh, an unbeaten 154 against Chhattisgarh and a brilliant 124 against Kerala in just 129 balls.
