Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award

As a tribute to Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution in promoting communal harmony, national integration and peace, the All India Congress Committee instituted the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award in 1992. This award is given to those people who have done exemplary work in establishing peace in the society. The inaugural award was given in 1995 to Jagan Nath Kaul, the founder of SOS Children’s Village of India.

Born on 20 August 1944 to former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi, Rajiv was the youngest PM in the country’s history. He took on the role of Prime Minister after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984. During his tenure, Rajiv Gandhi brought about many historic changes which included the expansion of information technology in the country.

He also launched a National Policy on Education in 1986 with the aim of improving and expanding the institutions of higher education across India. In the same year, he established the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya system, a centralized government school, to improve the rural sector of the society by providing free school education from classes VI to XII.
