Samajwadi Party leader arrested, activists booked for vandalizing a car with BJP flag, PM Modi’s poster in Kanpur

A car carrying a BJP flag was vandalized by SP workers in Kanpur on Tuesday.

A case has been registered against several workers of Samajwadi Party for the violence that took place in Kanpur on Tuesday. According to an FIR, an SP worker identified as Sachin Kesharwani has been arrested while 8 to 10 of his supporters are missing. Sachin Kesharwani is an activist of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (student body).

According to the police, a conspiracy was being hatched to create unrest in Kanpur ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Tuesday. Police said SP workers vandalized a car that had BJP flags and a poster of PM Modi. They also burnt an effigy of PM Modi on the roadside in the city.

The video was then widely circulated on social media platforms with the intention of harassing BJP workers and creating unrest in the Prime Minister’s programme.

However, during the investigation it was found that the SP workers vandalized their own car by giving it the form of a BJP car. Police said further investigation into the matter would continue and those responsible for the violence would face the law.

After the incident, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya promised strict action against the perpetrators. Separately, Union Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar slammed the Samajwadi Party for trying to create trouble in the state ahead of the elections.

In Delhi, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra slammed the Samajwadi Party for inciting violence ahead of the elections.

“Yesterday just before the Prime Minister addressed the rally, a video went viral on social media. In that video there was a BJP car, some lotus (BJP symbol) stickers were put on it and also a poster of the Prime Minister. Was put behind the car. Later, an investigation was done by the police and it was found that the car was also not of a BJP worker but of another SP Chhatra Sabha leader Ankur Patel. This car was masqueraded as BJP’s car. was decorated,” he said.
