Samantha’s Shakuntalam and NTR’s Shakuntala both, released 57 years apart, failed at the box office

NT Rama Rao and B Saroja Devi’s film Shakuntala was released in 1966.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s film Shakuntalam released on 14th April but failed to impress the audience at the box office. Critics were highly disappointed and Shakuntalam proved to be a huge commercial failure. As per reports, the film was made on a budget of Rs 60 crore and earned Rs 20 crore at the box office. But did you know that not only Samantha’s film failed at the box office, but NT Rama Rao and B Saroja Devi starrer 1966 film Sakuntala also failed to impress the audience.

Talking about Shakuntalam, Samantha was appreciated for her portrayal of Shakuntala, despite negative reviews and collections. Gunasekhar wrote and directed the Telugu language mythological love drama film. It is based on Kalidasa’s classic play Abhigyana Shakuntalam.

Dev Mohan played the lead role of King Dushyant, the ruler of the Puru dynasty in the film. Allu Arjun’s daughter Arha also made her acting debut with Shakuntalam. The film’s supporting cast included Mohan Babu, Jisshu Sengupta, Madhu, Gautami, Aditi Balan and Ananya Nagalla.

The plot of the film centered on the love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyant. Due to a sage’s curse, Dushyant forgets everything about Shakuntala.

Major part of the film was shot in Hyderabad, including Ramoji Film City, Ananthagiri Hills and Gandhipet Lake.

At the same time, the 1966 film Shakuntala, starring NT Rama Rao and B Saroja Devi, also failed to impress the audience. Shakuntala was a Telugu language Hindu mythological film directed by Kamalkara Kameswara Rao. The film also starred Nagayya, Relangi, Ramana Reddy, Padmanabham, Mukkamala, KVS Sharma, Geethanjali, Saradha, Pushpavalli, EV Saroja, Nirmalamma and Baby Kutty Padmini in supporting roles.

Shakuntalam, directed by Gunasekhar, failed to live up to the expectations of the audience even after putting so much effort in the promotions. Now this film is available on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.
