The five-judge bench of the Supreme Court started hearing the case of same-sex marriage on Tuesday after the apex court referred at least 15 petitions on the matter to a larger bench for an authoritative decision last month by a CJI-led bench, which called it a “very seminal issue”.

On Wednesday, Center filed a fresh affidavit in Supreme Court and asked for the opinions of states and union territories on the matter. This came as the Center has expressed its opposition to the idea of ​​granting legal status to same-sex marriage and called the petitions as reflecting “urban elitist views for the purpose of social acceptance”.
