Samsung recently launched a new Expert Raw app that helps Samsung Galaxy S22 series users hone their photography skills. The app is claimed to deliver a studio-like experience in your pocket, and the photos clicked by the expert RAW app look like they were clicked on a DSLR. The app has been developed by Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI-B) with the help of Camera Solutions team and Intelligent Mapping team. Following the app’s launch, Girish Kulkarni, Samsung’s Head of Camera Solutions, answered our many questions about the expert RAW app that turns the camera in your pocket into a DSLR-like experience. let’s take a look:
What does the Expert Raw App do? What are the main benefits for users?
Girish: A great leap forward for expert RAW photography. It essentially puts a professional studio in your pocket. Whether you’re a professional photographer or you’re just a user who wants to capture amazing content, any expert can take full advantage of the Galaxy S22’s pro-grade camera with RAW. It captures high-quality, high dynamic range images in multi-frame RAW format that enables precise post-capture editing and professional results.
With Expert Raw, people can capture a lot of detail in a single photo – from dark details to bright highlights. It also significantly reduces noise and increases sharpness and detail. If you’re looking for ultimate creative control, you can choose your own settings for aspects like ISO, shutter speed, white balance, EV, and focus, and even choose how you want the subject and focus. Which lens do you want to use for the scene? Lastly, because both JPEG and DNG files are saved during shooting, you can jump right into the Adobe Lightroom app on your smartphone or PC and edit with ease.

Q: What was the original inspiration for Expert Raw?
Girish: As we heard input from professional photographers, who were mostly using DSLR cameras, they wanted to get a pro-grade experience with a smartphone. Our consumer research also showed that after using their smartphone’s auto camera for a long period of time, ordinary users were very passionate about deeply exploring Samsung’s pro-grade camera capabilities to become better photographers. The more we talked to professional and amateur photographers, the more we understood their needs in terms of RAW image capturing, camera controls, post-editing experience, creative abilities, and more. That’s when we set out to create a new pro-grade experience based on RAW capturing so that every level of photographer can merge our camera controls and their creativity to enjoy professional looking photos.
Q: What role did Mr-B play in the development of Expert Raw? What were the team’s main areas of focus?
Girish: Expert Raw was a complex R&D project, and SRI-B’s role was to think in terms of end-to-end for the best consumer experience. This required multi-domain expertise and intense collaboration between multiple teams. SRI-B is equipped with strong multi-domain expertise teams, so we set up a task force of talented experts. They all worked together as a team within SRI-B and also with a large team of experts based in Korea and the MPI Lab.
Multi-domain expertise and close collaboration with all key stakeholders helped SRI-B to continuously focus on improving the product experience, end-to-end pipeline etc. of expert RAW.

Q: How does this collaboration with MPI Lab and SRI-B plan to develop more innovative cameras?

Girish: MPI Lab and SRI-B have been working together for the past few years to develop the world’s best Night Mode for Samsung’s flagship smartphones. This collaboration helped lead us to the success story that is Expert Raw on Galaxy S22. We are excited to continue that momentum for the next innovative products to come.
In the future, we want to continue to grow specialist RAW while focusing on creating a new ecosystem for pro photography that fully utilizes pro-grade camera capabilities.
