Puri-based sand artist Manas Sahu on Monday created a sculpture at Odisha’s Golden Beach to celebrate International Day of Yoga. International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June.

Through sculpture, Sahu wanted to raise awareness among people to maintain a healthy lifestyle by practicing yoga. The sculpture depicts “Yoga for Humanity” and “International Day of Yoga”.

Speaking to India Today, Sahu said, “Through this sand sculpture I wanted to convey the message that if a person incorporates yoga in his daily life he can stay healthy and fit.”

He said that yoga is an ancient penance that originated in India that combines physical, mental and spiritual activities to achieve harmony of body and mind. He said that there are many benefits of practicing yoga regularly and it will help in achieving overall health in every individual.

The 17-foot-wide sand sculpture took about seven hours to finish. Sahu used around 12 tonnes of sand to make the idol.
