Sanitation workers demonstrated in front of Prakasam Bhawan in Ongole on January 30 (Monday), demanding withdrawal of facial recognition-based attendance system.

Leading the protest, Andhra Pradesh Municipal Workers’ Union (APMWU) state general secretary P. Subbarayudu said most of the workers were illiterate and did not have smart phones.

The leader of the All India Trade Union Congress-led APMWU argued that instead of acceding to the workers’ demands, including wage hike, the state government has harassed them by introducing unnecessary mobile apps.

They raised slogans for a monthly salary of ₹18,500 for the drivers of garbage collection vehicles launched under the Swachh Andhra Pradesh (CLAP).

He also demanded jobs for the families of the deceased sweepers and a well-equipped hospital under the Employees’ State Insurance Scheme.
