Sarbananda Sonowal meets Trade Minister of Norway; Discusses matters relating to shipping, ports

New Delhi [India]Feb 10 (ANI): Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal held a meeting with Jan Christian Vestre, Minister of Trade and Industry of Norway.

On Thursday, the two ministers discussed issues of bilateral interest, including green ports and shipping, training of seafarers, use of alternative fuels such as green ammonia and hydrogen for future shipping, and sustainable ship recycling.

“Implementation of Green Coastal Shipping Solutions Program in India was also discussed. Both the countries reiterated their commitment towards using niche technologies to implement zero emission solutions in the ports and shipping sector,” said Minister Sonowal.

In recent years, both countries have increasingly been exploiting their bilateral economic and technological complementarities.

India-Norwegian bilateral relations are marked by regular exchange of high-level visits between the two countries.

The last Joint Working Group Maritime meeting between the two countries was held in November 2022. The Ministry of Ports also participated in the 5th edition of India-Norway Task Force on Blue Economy in June 2022. India is also a part of GreenVoyage 2050. In May 2019 a partnership project was launched between the Government of Norway and the IMO, which aims to transform the shipping industry towards a low carbon future.

During the meeting, Sarbananda Sonowal said that the visit of the Norwegian minister would lead to increased maritime cooperation in shipping and ports between the two countries.

He added, “To fulfill our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Green Ports and Green Shipping, we look forward to sharing our expertise on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Ferries, Autonomous Surface Ships, Low-Emission LNG-Hybrid Ships to Norway.” Zero-emission solar batteries Ro-Ro ferry vessels, inland and coastal LPG/LNG carriers”.(ANI)
