Thane: Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik has demanded Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to declare Dahi Handi as a sport in the state which, he said, could help thousands of Govindas who follow the tradition get proper employment under sports quota.
Sarnaik made the appeal while announcing its Dahi Handi celebrations, which will see a prize money of Rs 21 lakh for the troupe that broke the previous record of a nine-tiered human pyramid.
The demand to declare Dahi Handi as a sport comes after Shinde granted Sarnaik’s request to declare the festival as a public holiday. Sarnaik’s son Purvesh said that they are making all efforts to follow all the guidelines laid down by the court and ensure overall safety of the Govindas. – Manoj Bejeri
