In its latest medical fitness guidelines for new recruits or promoted ones, the bank said that a candidate will be considered fit in case of pregnancy which is less than three months.

After facing criticism from various quarters, the country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) on Saturday decided to suspend its circular on recruitment of pregnant women. SBI recently reviewed its ‘Fitness Standards for Recruitment in Banks’, which includes norms for pregnant women candidates. Under the new rules, a female candidate with a pregnancy of more than three months will be considered “temporarily ineligible” and can join the bank within four months after delivery.

The move drew criticism from various quarters including trade unions and the Delhi Commission for Women. The bank said in a statement that keeping in view the public sentiments, SBI has decided to put on hold the revised instructions regarding recruitment of pregnant women candidates and continue with the existing instructions.

“However, if the pregnancy is more than 3 months, she will be considered temporarily ineligible and may be allowed to join within 4 months after the delivery of the child,” said a statement issued on December 31 to new recruits and promoted people. As per Medical Fitness and Ophthalmic Standards for the year 2021. SBI said the revised guidelines were aimed at providing clarity on various health parameters where the instructions were not clear or were too old.
