SC appoints former Punjab and Haryana HC judge Rakesh Jain to oversee Lakhimpur Kheri case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday appointed former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge, Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain, to oversee the day-to-day investigation of the Uttar Pradesh SIT into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which eight people, including four farmers, were killed. 3 October.

A bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli also took note of the names of IPS officers provided by the state government and appointed three officers as part of the state SIT.

The CJI said the detailed order would be passed soon.

The top court said it will hear the matter again after the SIT completes its investigation and files status report and charge sheet in the case.

The Uttar Pradesh government had on November 15 agreed to the apex court’s suggestion that a former judge of its choice could be appointed to oversee the investigation of the state SIT.
