SC Collegium recommends transfer of 7 High Court judges, Justice Nikhil Karial not in the list

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, on Thursday recommended transfer of seven high court judges to various high courts in the country.

The list of High Court judges who have been recommended for transfer does not include Justice Nikhil S Kariel of the Gujarat High Court.

Media reports on the proposed transfer of Justice Karial to the Patna High Court triggered a protest by lawyers in the Gujarat High Court and later a delegation of bar leaders met the CJI, who claimed that the matter would be looked into.

The resolutions of the collegium, also comprising Justices SK Kaul and SA Nazeer, were uploaded on the apex court’s website.

The seven judges sought to be transferred include Madras High Court judge Justice VM Velumani. He will join the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Battu Devanand has been transferred from the Andhra Pradesh High Court to the Madras High Court.

Justice D Ramesh has been transferred from the Andhra Pradesh High Court to the Allahabad High Court, while Justice Lalitha Kanneganti has been transferred from the Telangana High Court to the Karnataka High Court.

Justice D Nagarjuna has been transferred from the Telangana High Court to the Madras High Court, while Justice T Raja has been transferred from the Madras High Court to the Rajasthan High Court.

Justice A Abhishek Reddy has been transferred from Telangana High Court to Patna High Court.

Advocates of the Telangana High Court had also opposed the proposed transfer of Justice Reddy and later a delegation of bar leaders met the CJI.

The collegium also approved a proposal for elevation of two advocates as judges in the Rajasthan High Court in another meeting held on November 23, 2022.

The advocates whose names have been approved are Anil Kumar Upman and Nupur Bhat.

The three-member collegium that decides on high court judges has also approved the proposal to elevate six judicial officers as judges in the Rajasthan High Court.

The names of judicial officers who have been approved are Rajendra Prakash Soni, Ashok Kumar Jain, Yogendra Kumar Purohit, Bhuvan Goyal, Praveer Bhatnagar and Ashutosh Kumar.

In another decision, the collegium has also approved the proposal to appoint two additional judges as permanent judges in the Chhattisgarh High Court.

The names include Justices Narendra Kumar Vyas and Naresh Kumar Chandravanshi, -PTI
