NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has sought response of the Center and others on a plea filed by a girl, who was denied admission to a medical course due to a speech defect.
A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli issued notice to Union of India, national medical commission and others and sought their answers within three weeks.
The top court was hearing a petition filed by a girl suffering from a speech defect, which has challenged the amended Medical Council of India. Regulations on Graduate Medical Education1997.
“Consequent to the regulations, though the petitioner is suffering from a benchmark disability within the meaning of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, he is excluded from pursuing his medical education on the ground that his speech impairment is more than 40 per cent. Notice. Release,” the bench said.
