Heavy rain was seen in Bengaluru on Thursday

Bangalore:

Schools are closed today in Bengaluru Urban and some other districts of South Interior Karnataka due to heavy rain forecast. An “orange alert” has been issued for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapura, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Ramanagara, Shivamogga and Tumakuru. Chikballapura has closed schools for two days.

Heavy rain lashed the capital Bengaluru on Thursday, with less than several days of sunshine. At the beginning of this year, the temperature has dropped due to severe cold.

Shankar’s 50-year-old house in Ulsoor, Bengaluru, where the family has been living for three generations, collapsed in the early hours of Friday. After this, it rained continuously from Thursday evening till night.

Shankar, a retired postal worker, told NDTV, “At around 5.30 am we heard a loud noise and she collapsed. We didn’t sleep for even a minute the whole night.” Luckily, nobody got hurt.

He said, “After midnight, around 1 am, we went next to our daughter’s house. Whenever she comes, she stays there. We were there in a small room. By the grace of God, We are saved.”

But important documents and ornaments were in the living room of the house – and that part collapsed. Shankar was hoping that the goods could be pulled out of the rubble of his house. “Everything is there – receipts, government papers, jewellery. Please, it should be retrieved. Every penny is hard earned. That’s the principal our parents taught us.”

Bengaluru Urban DC J Manjunath spoke to NDTV about the unusually heavy rains and its impact. “We are seeing continuous rain in the last two months. Since October, the annual rainfall has been almost 100 percent more than the estimated annual rainfall. There has been an increase of 634 percent in the last seven days. We used to receive 11 mm of rainfall. In these seven days, But we have got around 80 mm. In the last 24 hours also it has been quite high, it has been raining almost incessantly. As a precaution we have closed all the schools in Bengaluru urban district,” the official said.

Agricultural activity in the district has also been affected. “The district has about 21,000 hectares of agricultural land of which 100 were sown. Ragi was the main crop and was sustained for the last few days. But after the last three days of incessant rains, the ragi crop has fallen. The crop is gone; its Harvesting cannot be done,” said Mr. Manjunath.

“The damage assessment is on. There are horticultural crops. Bangalore is famous for its vegetables and flowers, we also export flowers, but it has been affected. We also have grapes, guava and banana, some of which are due to incessant rains. have been affected by.”

The problem of traffic jams in the city often increases when it rains during peak hours. In the last years, the low-lying areas of the city have been affected by floods. Bangalore used to be a city of hundreds of lakes – and many houses and layouts were built on what used to be lake beds. There is a possibility of flooding in these areas after heavy rains. Encroachment and blocking of storm water drains is another issue contributing to floods. The administration has made efforts to remove such encroachments over the years. The civic agency BBMP also tried to identify buildings that were at risk of collapse.
