Schools of Delhi can reopen after winter break, Education Department sent proposal to Environment Ministry

Schools are closed in Delhi after coronavirus and then pollution. Now, with the reduction in air pollution, the government is considering reopening schools. The Education Department of Delhi has sent two proposals to the Environment Ministry.

The new proposal submitted by the Delhi Education Department reportedly suggests immediate reopening of schools for students of class 6 and above, while for students of class 5 and below, schools to resume from December 20 can go.

The environment ministry will send these proposals to the Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM), after which the final decision on reopening the schools will be taken by the CAQM. “All public and private schools, colleges and educational institutions in NCR will remain closed till further orders allowing online education only,” the CAQM had said in its earlier statement.

Schools in the city opened on 1 November for all classes, including primary and middle school students, but a rise in air pollution forced them to close two weeks later. They reopen on 29 November, only to close on 2 December. Quoting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, media organizations said that the decision on reopening the school will be taken after the winter break.

Parents have also split over the ongoing issues of schools in Delhi. While many parent associations have claimed that they do not want to send their children to school for physical classes due to the fear of COVID and air pollution. Many have demanded the Delhi Education Department to resume physical classes for students, claiming that most of the public places are open and if children are visiting all these places then why not schools. He has claimed that the students are suffering a lot academically due to school closure for a long time.

Last week, many parents took to social media to demand the reopening of schools. Parents created a Twitter campaign with #backtoschool, where concerns were raised as the decision to close schools would disrupt students’ studies.

Taking back the decision to reopen schools, Delhi Environment Minister, Gopal Rai had said, “For a long time, children were not able to go to school. Hence, there was a call to reopen schools keeping in mind the improvement in pollution levels. However, the pollution level in Delhi is getting worse now.”
