Schools open again in Delhi today, will Delhi University also resume physical classes?

The Delhi government has got approval from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to reopen all educational institutions including schools, colleges and universities. The Delhi government will allow children of class 6 and above to visit the campus and resume teaching in person for them. Schools for young children will reopen from December 27.

Even the schools are reopening but till now no decision has been taken on reopening the colleges. The students of Delhi University have been demanding the reopening of the campus for more than 30 days now. Students claim that being off campus and online classes are harming learning. The students who had taken admission in 2020 are now in the final year of the degree but have not attended the physical classes.

While the government has given its nod in view of reduction in air pollution and vaccinated population including teachers, staff and a large section of students, however, Delhi University is yet to announce its reopening dates.

Meanwhile, Delhi Technical University (DTU) has decided to resume practical work, research work, studio work for undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physical mode amid COVID precautions.

Earlier, DU officials had clarified that The premises cannot reopen until DDMA allows 100 per cent capacity. Currently, campuses do not allow more than 50 per cent of students to be on board due to the pandemic.

DU students have started an online petition demanding the reopening of the university. “Thousands of students living in remote areas have not been able to attend even a single class due to inaccessibility of internet as well as resources,” the petition said. “From malls to cinema halls to metro to liquor shops, everything is open. Then why not Delhi University? Why education is declining and struggling because of the government. What is the main source of everything booming in this country? is?,” it added.

After schools closed after only four days of reopening in Delhi due to pollution, the AAP government sent a detailed proposal for the re-opening of classes for children of class 6 and above and for children of class 5 and below Was, however, no different proposition. So far sent to colleges. The Air Quality Management Commission in the National Capital Region and adjoining areas had allowed the reopening of all educational institutions, including colleges and universities, in a ‘phased manner’ amid the appropriate handling of COVID-19.
